to take advantage of the real opportunities in ESOS.

What is ESOS?

Whilst the UK government’s Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS) has been on the agenda for large organisations since Phase 1 launched in 2014, impacted businesses should now begin to prepare themselves for their next audit as the window for Phase 2 is open.
With this compliance period now well underway, businesses who fall within this remit should now be ensuring they have their compliance process in place and live, so they are ready to submit their ESOS reports by 5th December 2019.
If your business is new to ESOS, there are many routes to compliance, so early adoption of a suitable compliance process is vital – it often takes a business over a year to fully embed an energy management system so we are recommending our clients act today.

Did you know...

ESOS audits have to be completed and submitted every four years in order for your business to remain compliant

Does ESOS impact my business?

Although there some exemptions for public bodies, the regulations require all other large UK organisations to take three important steps before the compliance date of 5 December 2019. This includes those who have one of the following:

250 + employees, or

An annual turnover exceeding €50 million (£38,937,777) & an annual balance sheet exceeding €43 million (£33,486,489)

What if I’m part of the Public Sector or a SME?

Whilst the Public Sector and SME organisations have no mandatory obligation to comply with the scheme, you are encouraged to adopt ESOS methodologies to achieve energy and carbon savings as it has so many wide-reaching benefits.

There are just 3 Steps to ESOS Phase 2 Compliance

Measure your total energy consumption

Conduct audits to identify cost-effective energy efficiency opportunities

Report compliance to your national scheme administrator – the Environment Agency in England, SEPA in Scotland, NIEA in Northern Ireland and NRW in Wales

For a small investment, protect your business

The one element of ESOS compliance that organisations are only just able to begin is collecting the data for reporting their total energy consumption. The earliest this could have begun is at the start of 2018, as ESOS compliance requires a 12-month period of total energy consumption data which includes the qualification date of 31 December 2018.
The Government estimates that the average cost to each business will be around £6,600 per audit based on a 4-year cycle but estimates that the average saving should be £35,400 from the initial audit.
Eligible companies who do not comply with ESOS can face large penalties up to £50,000 and / or £500 per day for up to 80 days until compliance is complete, plus names of noncomplying organisations will be publicised.
